Prefects Board

School prefects are an important part of any school’s leadership team. They play a vital role in maintaining order and discipline amongst students, as well as helping to promote positive behavior and attitudes within the student body. As such, they’re often looked up to by their fellow pupils.Almost every school in the Sri Lanka offers students the opportunity to become a prefect.A student who has been meticulously selected to carry out certain responsibilities and duties. There are many types of prefects, including Head Prefect, House Captains and so on.

Duties of a Prefect

A school prefect is a student leader who takes on the responsibility of being an exemplary role model for their peers, to perform certain responsibilities and giving them some authority in school. .A school prefect is expected to carry out multiple duties depending on which position they are given.

Prefects have many roles and responsibilities, such as........

  • Mentoring: Prefects provide guidance and support to students in need. They often act as mentors by offering advice, listening to concerns, and helping resolve conflicts amongst themselves or other students.

  •  Organizing Events: Prefects also help organize events that promote creativity and collaboration among their peers. This might involve planning activities for extracurricular clubs or organizing fundraisers for charity organizations.

  • Enforcing Discipline: Lastly, prefects are responsible for enforcing disciplinary rules in the school environment; this includes monitoring hallways during  class changeovers and intervening when necessary in cases of misbehavior or disruption.

 Head Prefect's Duties...

The Head Prefect represents the school at events in and out of school, for example an in-school Prize Giving or a local charity event. They are generally expected to give public speeches from time to time in front of different year groups, the school or attendees to the events they are present        at. They may also act as a guide for visitors to the school. The Head Prefect tend to lead other prefects and assist them with their duties. They must also act as good role-models for younger students and may get involved in activities involving the lower school.

Deputy Head Prefect's Duties...

The Deputy Head Prefect almost act as understudies for the Head Prefect. They may attend events in place of the Head and fulfil their duties if they are absent. They too are present at some events but appear less frequently. They assist the Heads in all their duties and are their second in command so to speak. They must act as role-models for the younger school and may be involved in lower school events too. They may also be required to give speeches.

Benifits of being a prefect

The role of a school prefect offers many more benefits than just the opportunity to mentor and lead projects.

  • According to recent studies, nearly 80% of students who become prefects report increased self-confidence by the end of their term. This boost in confidence is due to the extra responsibilities placed on them as leaders such as creating plans for events, guiding tours around campus, and moderating assemblies or clubs.
  • By taking on these duties, not only do they gain skills that are applicable beyond their time at school but also they learn how to manage people effectively while developing strong communication capabilities. Additionally, prefects have access to exclusive networking opportunities with teachers, staff members, and alumni which will likely aid in future endeavors after graduation.
